This evidence synthesis captures findings from USAID’s ex-post studies in Ghana and Senegal, and bolsters the evidence base for market systems development. It will be updated in early 2026 to incorporate additional evidence from upcoming studies planned in Bangladesh, the DRC, and Mozambique.
This brief includes data-rich findings on what lasted, what did not, scale, and benefits for target populations (e.g. yields, incomes, the scale of engagement, and satisfaction with the business model). It spotlights six implications for future programming, including the importance of building trust, tailored measurement, and smart use of subsidies.
