USAID’s Private Sector Engagement Amidst COVID –19: A Landscape Study. Washington, D.C.: United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Private Sector Engagement Hub. Prepared by DAI, MarketShare Associates, and TechnoServe through the Feed the Future Market Systems and Partnerships (MSP) Activity, 2023.

This report offers an in-depth assessment of 30 USAID-funded activities undertaken by 16 implementing partners active during the pandemic in over 20 countries and across both agricultural and nonagricultural sectors (e.g., tourism, finance and information and communications technology (ICT)). The assessment addresses three key research questions:

  1. What were the main challenges and risks that the COVID-19 pandemic created within market systems, particularly for firms?
  2. What were the results associated with strengthened firm and market system resilience from different private sector engagement (PSE) strategies implemented by USAID during the COVID-19 pandemic?
  3. What are the lessons learned around emerging good practices on firm and market system resilience that can inform future PSE programming?

The report also includes a matrix detailing specific PSE strategies across five categories, with short, bullet-style program examples, as well as spotlights on practical tools, metrics (including custom indicators and reporting) and special learning studies that informed real-time decisions and pivots during the crises.
